Celebrating World Emoji Day with Entrepreneurs!
If you’re clueless as to what this is, here’s a brief: Emojis have become an integral part of our lives. Such intense and complex emotions have now been reduced to mere symbols. Hence, to commend this revolution, July 17 is commemorated as World Emoji Day.
Why the specific date you may ask?
Well, July 17 is the day marked on two of the emoji keyboard symbols—the calendar and the notepad. This is because that was the day iCal was first premiered at MacWorld. In the midst of all, we may forget that the concept of emojis was nothing but a (very fun) entrepreneurial venture.
Shigetaka Kurita is the man to thank for these – he invented it while working on the Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode mobile Internet platform in 1999.
However, the little faces didn’t come easy. Because he wasn’t a designer himself (rather an economics major!), Kurita’s plan was to draft some ideas to show large companies like Sharp, Panasonic, and Fujitsu. They would have the design resources to pitch in.
Sadly, they didn’t share his excitement for the project. Skepticism was everywhere but he persevered. With a paper and pen he got to work with his team and made his own designs.
The ‘i-mode’ was the world’s first widespread mobile internet platform, with features like weather forecasts, entertainment reservations, news, and email. The cute characters were created as part of i-mode’s messaging features and to be a distinguishing feature from other services. The concept became immensely popular and the rest is just history.
The best thing about emojis is that anyone and everyone can relate to them – even entrepreneurs! Take a look at these:
