On the occasion of Independence Day, it would be only apt to celebrate an entrepreneur who has relentlessly worked hard towards making India better. Although there are countless souls who have dedicated their entrepreneurial skills to social causes, today we’re felicitating Nand Kishore Chaudary of Jaipur Rugs.

Jaipur Rugs is one of India’s largest manufacturers of hand-made rugs and a global leader as well. It has continued to carry forward India’s rich heritage to more than 40 countries around the world. The company’s operations span across 20+ branches, 6 states and 600 villages in India with distribution to over 40 countries with an independent base of over 40,000 artisans.

Nand Kishore Chaudhary, a resident of Rajasthan, often spent a lot of his time studying the Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita and works by Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore as a child. This instilled a lifelong affection and compassion for the less fortunate in him. He always wanted to do something to make a difference in their lives. And so he did.

He joined his father at his footwear shop for a while as he pursued his education. However, shortly after graduation, NKC decided to venture out on his own. He started a carpet-making business that eventually turned into the great – Jaipur Rugs Co.

NKC’s only dream was to help people at the lowest levels of society. Although his carpet business began on a very small scale with only 9 local weavers, the goal of providing these poor artisans with an opportunity to earn a sustainable living was never compromised. Jaipur Rugs Co. was formed almost as a by-product of this vision.

“Finding yourself through losing yourself” is his philosophy.

Today, he is regarded as the Gandhi of the carpet industry due to his commitment to empowering and uplifting society through the art of carpet weaving.

LEARNINGS:

  1. Doing good for society will eventually do good for you as well.
  2. Find yourself and your purpose by letting go of all other material things.
  3. Starting small still makes a difference.

With that, we applaud Nand Kishore Chaudhary for all he has done for the people of this country and we hope to see many more following in his footsteps!
